Food is once of the basic necessity of life . without food no one can survive . It is not only human beings who eat food but all  animals eat food to live. Food is the substance that is used as a source of nourishment by an organisms.Food is eaten by all living organisms because it gives us energy to do all types of activities,it provides nourishment for growth.If someone does not take balanced diet,he/she may not remain healthy,it enables our body to fight against diseases.Thus,it protects our body from diseases and it enables our body to repair and replace its worn out tissues.we eat different types of food at different times,which we call meals.meals are also termed in different ways based on different timings.the foods eaten in morning is called breakfast.The food eaten in afternoon is called lunch.The food eaten at night is called dinner.besides these three main meals,we eat snacks at any time between breakfast-lunch or lunch-dinner.cereals are the main source of food because they fulfill most of our energy requirements.examples:rice,wheat , maize, sorghum, barley, millets.pulses and legumes are rich in proteins.proteins help in our body growth.example:gram, pigeon pea, cow pea, green gram, black gram.fruits have high water content and eaten raw.they are rich in vitamins and minerals.Examples: potato,tomato,onion,carrot,spinach,brinjal,cauliflower,cabbage,cucumber.sugar is an important source of energy.sugarcane is a stem while sugarbeet is a root of plant.oils are not directly taken as food item.They are mostly used to cook other food materials.Example mustard, groundnut, soya bean, sunflower, olive, coconut,etc.Spices makes our food more tasty and also provide flavour to our food.Example:ginger, coriander, cumin, red chilly.
